Every time you hear disheartening news about the increasing rate we are losing coral reefs worldwide you feel hopeless, wondering if there is anything you could do to help? At One Drop we are not exempt from the consternation for the harsh degrade of the environment, and in particular of our oceans.

But we have good news for you today:
Let us introduce you to a project that stole our hearts and gave us back hopes: Coralisma is a non-profit organization pioneering the “Coral Restoration Foundation” method of farming corals to restore the reefs to a healthy shape.

This is your chance to get involved and make a difference while playing an active role in coral conservation.

How are we involved?

One Drop was invited to work alongside Coralisma and Inapesca, supported by Phantom divers, to document their outplanting and maintenance work with the staghorn corals in Playa del Carmen. This was an eye-opening experience: Watching a well-coordinated, efficient and motivated team of biologists and volunteers outplanting almost 1000 corals on our shallow reef, made us realize that not everything is lost, and we can actually apport solid positive changes to the status of our reefs.

One Drop decided to join forces with Coralisma, to contribute to the battle against climate change to recover our delicate reef system.

What can YOU do to help? here’s how…

  1. Donate to Coralisma’s GoFundMe account at the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/coralisma Any amount helps!

  2. Follow Coralisma and One Drop on social media to spread awareness. You would be surprised by how little is known by non-divers about the problems that affect the reefs worldwide.

  3. If you decide to visit Playa del Carmen area, join a tour with One Drop, we’ll take you to explore a beautiful dive site and to visit our “coral trees”. You will have the opportunity to help hands-on with the corals' trees maintenance and learn more about coral conservation.

  4. If you are based in Playa del Carmen or nearby, join our local volunteer program and be part of our corals' saviors team. Make sure you sign up and don’t miss the chance to give back!

Babies (Corals) and the beast
(bull sharks observation dive + coral nursery)

From November till March

Your “Coralisma experience” will start with a dive in search of the majestic bull sharks. We will plunge over a sandy bottom at about 23m / 75 ft deep where we will be quietly approached by the majestic bull sharks.

After spending the first dive observing these graceful apex predators approaching us, we’ll head to our corals' nursery. We will introduce you to the Coralisma project, explain the appropriate maintenance techniques and finally, we’ll dive straight into action giving the help the corals need. The nursery and the corals need to be constantly maintained and cleaned since they are continuously swept by the Yucatan strait current and are constantly under attack of algae and other parasites. You will have the privilege to assist hands-on the pioneers of coral conservation in Mexico, playing a key role in the success of the coral restoration project.

Includes: Transportation, bilingual diving instructor, a seat on One Drop private diving vessel, tanks & weights, presentation about coral conservation, maintenance tools use.

Not included: Personal diving equipment (wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, BCD, regulator,  computer)

Price @165 USD

Coral trees and underwater gardens
(coral trees+ Jardines reef) - for less experienced divers - all year round

After an in-depth presentation/orientation about the corals biology and the Coralisma’s project, we’ll head straight to our baby corals nursery, checking they are doing ok and giving the appropriate maintenance. You will learn how to clean and take care of the staghorn corals trees, and you’ll be given the tools to fight the attack of the parasites that might compromise the success of the project when they are not taking care of.
During the winter months, we have good chances to be temporarily distracted by bull sharks cruising by the nursery: in fact, the nearby reef inhabitants are attracted to pay a visit to these alien structures.
For our second dive we’ll visit a beautiful shallow reef thriving with life: enjoy being surrounded by schooling snappers and pork fish, while checking out weird and wonderful critters populating each crack in the reef.

Includes: Transportation, bilingual diving instructor, seat on One Drop private diving vessel, tanks & weights, presentation about coral conservation, maintenance tools use

Not included: Personal diving equipment (wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, BCD, regulator,  computer)
